Upgrade Links can be crafted and shared by your organization to motivate recurring supporters to contribute more.

đź”— For a visual guide on Upgrade Links, check out the interactive demo of our Upgrade Links. There are three demos available: Upgrade links for increasing the main donation amount, for supporters to start covering costs, and sending upgrade links using Mailchimp.

Creating these links allows supporters to either increase their donation amount or begin covering their transaction costs, based on the type of link distributed. Note that these links do not permit supporters to reduce or cancel their recurring donations.

Organizations are responsible for crafting and distributing these links, which can be communicated to supporters through email campaigns. Links can also be created with a hash function or without.

doesn’t distribute Upgrade Links to supporters. Once created, it’s your organization’s responsibility to distribute them correctly.

There are two types of Upgrade Links available:

  • Main donation amount upgrade: Encourage a supporter who donates 25 USD monthly to increase it to 40 USD. givetly’s AI chooses optimal amounts based on factors like supporter location and previous donations to encourage successful upgrades.
  • Cost coverage upgrade: Encourage supporters who don’t cover donation costs to start doing so—as an example, upgrading a regular 20 USD donation to cover fees could increase it to 22 USD.

Type 1: Upgrading the Main Donation Amount

This upgrade option pitches the supporter to increase their monthly donation, for example from 25 USD to 40 USD. AI determines the increase amounts shown to each supporter, also offering them a chance to cover their transaction costs during the process.

If the supporter is already covering costs and opts for a further upgrade, they’ll be informed about the revised total including increased donation and costs.

Type 2: Upgrading for Cost Coverage

Supporters are offered the choice to start covering the costs associated with their donation. When they open a cost-coverage link, they see a screen prompting this choice:

If a supporter already covers costs and receives this link by mistake, they’re shown an alternative message:

Hash Functions

You have the choice to create links using a secure hash function or not. A hash function encrypts data (secret key, supporter ID, and recurring ID) into a secure string within the Upgrade Link.

  • Without Hash Function: Supporters will need to confirm any donation increase via email.
  • With Hash Function: Increase confirmations are processed immediately in the system once agreed upon on-screen, improving conversion rates as email confirmation isn’t necessary.

From the second installment forward, monthly donors receive email prompts to increase contributions. AI determines suggested amounts. Supporters with set limits on their plan will not see this option in the final installment email.

Active recurring plans in the Donor Portal feature a Give More button, allowing supporters to boost their contributions or start covering transaction fees directly.

Upon selecting Give More, supporters enter a dedicated page—one showing donation increase options and coverage decisions based on their current status.
