Enable PAD (pre-authorized debit) for Canadian supporters to facilitate direct, compliant bank transfers via Stripe and Givetly.

Enabling PAD allows supporters to connect directly to their Canadian account and approve bank-to-bank transfers. These transactions will appear in Stripe and comply with Canadian requirements.

Please note that PAD is not visible in the Donor Portal for supporters, nor is it offered for those outside of Canada or for donations in currencies other than CAD.

Processing Fees

Fees for PAD donations are 1% + 0.40 CAD, capped at 5 CAD. An extra 1 CAD is charged for instant verification. A 5 CAD fee applies for failures and disputes.

Step 1: Enable PAD in Stripe

Determine if PAD is enabled in your Stripe account:

  1. Log into your Stripe dashboard.
  2. Click Settings (gear icon) in the top-right corner.
  3. In Payments, select Payment Methods.
  4. Check if PAD is Active under Bank redirects. If not, click Turn on.

Step 2: Enable PAD in Givetly

With a Canadian or US Stripe account connected to Givetly, enable PAD through these steps:

  1. Access the Givetly Dashboard.
  2. Select “Settings” from your profile dropdown.
  3. Choose “Payment methods” from the menu.
  4. Click on PAD (CA Direct Debit).
  5. Hit the Enable PAD button.

Step 3: Disable Stripe’s PAD Emails

If you’re using Givetly’s PAD solution, customize your emails and turn off Stripe’s PAD emails to avoid duplicates:

  1. Visit your Stripe dashboard.
  2. Go to Settings (gear icon).
  3. Find Business settings -> Emails.
  4. Toggle off Send Canada PAD mandate, debit initiation, and micro deposit verification emails.

Step 4: How Supporters Pay with PAD

Checkout Form

In your checkout or campaign page, a Bank transfer button will appear if the donation is 2 CAD or more. Supporters can pay by:

  • Clicking Agree and logging into their bank.
  • Clicking Manually verify to provide account details, confirmed via micro deposits.

If logging into their bank, transactions are instant. Otherwise, verification takes up to 5 business days.

PAD in the Virtual Terminal

When using the Virtual Terminal, select PAD to enter bank details for supporters. They will receive verification emails if activated.

Step 5: Customize Confirmation and Verification Emails

Manage and personalize Givetly emails both centrally in the Emails section and per campaign.

Supporters authorizing PAD will receive a “Donation in progress” email upon logging into their bank. Once confirmed, they’ll get a “Receipt” email.

Manual verifications trigger micro-deposits to supporters’ bank accounts leading to:

  • “PAD Bank Verification” email immediately.
  • ”PAD Bank Verification Instructions” after 2 days if not done.
  • ”PAD Bank Verification Reminder” every 4 days until verified.
  • ”Donation in progress” once verified.

Receipt Delivery Timeframes

Receipts are sent only when donations are marked as successful. For new donations, it can take up to 10 business days, and for recurring ones, up to 7 days.
