This guide explains how to manually create Upgrade Links, which can be sent to supporters to encourage donation increases without using hash functions. If your organization uses Mailchimp for emails, please refer to the Mailchimp Upgrade Links instructions. When a supporter clicks a non-hash link to upgrade their donation, they’ll need to confirm this by clicking ‘Confirm’ in an automatically sent email.
Step 1: Gather the Information You Need
To create an Upgrade Link, gather this information:
- Basic link for upgrade: Found in the Dashboard under Settings → Recurring plans → Upgrade Links. The basic link is derived from your Donor Portal URL. To change it, visit the Donor Portal settings.
- Recurring ID and Supporter ID: Export these IDs from the Dashboard in bulk.
Step 2: Assemble the Links

Determine the type of link you wish to create:
- Main donation upgrade: Encourages increasing the main donation amount.
- Cost coverage upgrade: Encourages covering transaction costs.

Creating Upgrade Links on a Large Scale
To generate Upgrade Links in bulk:
- Access our template. It has separate tabs for building links for main donation upgrades and transaction cost coverage.
- Follow the template’s instructions:
- Make a copy of the template.
- Replace the example basic link with your organization’s basic link.
- Copy and paste the Recurring IDs and Supporter IDs from the exported file into the template.
- Include any other supporter information required with the Upgrade Link.
- Extend the formula in the Finalized link column to generate all the links.
Step 3: Upload and Distribute the Links
With Upgrade Links ready, upload them to your CRM service and associate each supporter’s link with a call-to-action button in your email campaign. Activating the button will redirect them to an upgrade screen with AI-suggested increase amounts or transaction cost coverage options.
Note: does not distribute these links in emails — this must be completed by your organization for supporters to receive them. Links can be distributed via email, SMS, or other messaging services.
